We are absolutely devastated to report that our very popular sculpture of ‘Jack’ the lime worker in Grinlow Wood has been significantly vandalised and had very inappropriate graffiti carved into him.
We are investigating what we can do to repair him or if we can repair him. Meanwhile we will have to cover him.
This is so sad because he was in memory of all the families who had worked so hard on that hillside during the 18th & 19th centuries and many of whom had made their simple homes in the lime spoil.
He was also incredibly popular with families and children (and dogs ). Many children have posed for photos on his knee (this photo was taken with permission of the parent).
Please contact Buxton Civic Association if you have any information.
