Today, we’re pleased to announced that our Rail to Refuge scheme, which enables survivors of domestic abuse to travel to refuge for free, is being extended until the end of March 2021. This is thanks to the generosity of the Rail Delivery Group, the membership body for the rail industry.
Domestic abuse has worsened during the pandemic but Rail to Refuge has been a lifeline for many people experiencing abuse having already helped 836 survivors, including 210 children, access safety. On average, four survivors a day, have been using the scheme. The free travel it provides can be a lifeline for women experiencing abuse, who often do not have access to cash. 63% of survivors who used Rail to Refuge, would not have travelled if the journey wasn’t paid for.
Today’s extension will help hundreds more women take the train, for free, to reach a safe refuge.
