Help a child learn to read
380,000 children have been stuck in lockdown without a single book. As a Bookmark online volunteer, you’ll do something incredible and change a child’s story.
We’ve had a huge level of interest from schools who would like us to help their pupils catch up with their reading this Autumn Term. We have also been overwhelmed with the level of interest in volunteering, so please be aware that it might take us a little longer than normal to process your application. However, as each volunteer is the difference between a child getting reading support and a child falling behind with their learning, we really do need your help. Please apply now to stop the education gap from widening.
You’ll help a 5-8 year old learn to read so that they can succeed in school and beyond. You’ll book fun, flexible 30-minute reading sessions, around your schedule, all through the Bookmark app. Sessions can either take place virtually, through our secure online platform, or face-to-face* at your local primary school (*currently on pause due to Covid-19 restrictions).
92% OF BOOKMARK VOLUNTEERS FEEL THAT THEY’VE POSITIVELY IMPACTED A CHILD
Once you have read the Bookmark volunteer role description here, click above to apply. You can also come back to this button to complete your application at any time. For any questions, check out our FAQs or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please note: If you’d like to volunteer face-to-face in a local school, please still apply and we will let you know as soon as that programme resumes (it is currently on pause due to Covid-19 social distancing restrictions). In the meantime, you can join us as an online volunteer and change a child’s story through our virtual programme.
97% OF OUR VOLUNTEERS WOULD RECOMMEND OUR PROGRAMME TO A FRIEND
During our six-week programme, you’ll deliver one-to-one, 30-minute reading sessions, twice a week. Sessions are easy to organise – you simply select when you’re free on our Bookmark app.
You’ll volunteer with the same child each time, so you’ll be able to get to know their interests and see the progress they are making. You can use your creativity to inspire them, exploring a range of books, games and activities that help them to gain confidence and find enjoyment in reading.
In an average class, 8 children will leave primary school unable to read well. As a Bookmark volunteer, you’ll help to stop that trend. You’ll:
Help children who struggle with their reading gain essential skills at a crucial age. This will prepare them to move up the school ready to tackle new challenges without falling further behind. Three quarters of our volunteers noticed their reader become more confident with their reading.
Make learning to read fun by bringing your own personality into the sessions and getting to know your reader’s interests. It’s amazing when you introduce a book, comic or poem for the first time that they love! Two thirds of our volunteers noticed their reader enjoying reading more!
WE’LL SUPPORT YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
On the Bookmark app, you can arrange sessions at time and dates that work for you.
Receive training and learn new skills
We provide initial training, including six chapters, which cover everything from how to help early readers discuss books, through to safeguarding. This is a great chance for personal development, whether you’re looking to work with children, build your CV, or support your local community.
Join the community
Volunteers can share tips and stories on our online forum and meet other volunteers at Bookmark’s regular events. Your Community Manager is available to answer any questions you have along the way and will also check in with you at the start and end of every programme.
Enrich your week
Taking time out of your day to read with a child can help to support your own wellbeing by adding a new experience to your week. Discussing books with a child can change your perspective and it is also a great excuse to revisit your favourite childhood reads! You can read some volunteer experiences over on our blog.
SAFEGUARDING AND OTHER INFORMATION
Ensuring the safety of children and volunteers is at the heart of what we do. You can find our Safeguarding, Safer Recruitment and other policies relating to volunteering here. We have also put all the important information for our volunteer community in our volunteer information pack.
