From Derbyshire County Council:
We are warning people about a scam call from someone pretending to be from trading standards, or anyone else, saying that you are owed money because you overpaid bank charges.
Fraudsters will also claim to be from your bank, HMRC, other government department or other official body.
No legitimate caller would ask you for your banking information.
If you get a call like this don’t give out any personal information and hang up immediately. Wait five minutes and make sure you can hear a dial tone before making any other calls. Or call a friend first if you’re on a mobile, to make sure the fraudster isn’t keeping the line open.
If you, or someone you know, receives a call like this please contact Citizen’s Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 and the police on 101.
